🥖 Breakfast, Biarritz & A Beach That Bit Back: A Day of Food & Family

Today started with something truly special—the kids cooked breakfast for the adults! On the menu: golden crepes with Nutella and fresh fruit. It was sweet, simple, and heart-melting. Nothing beats sipping coffee while the kids serve up breakfast with proud smiles and sticky fingers.

After our delicious start, we hit the road for a day trip to Biarritz to meet up with our French cousins. Excitement was high, and hunger even higher. First stop: lunch at La Petite Plage—and wow. The view was stunning, the company joyful, and the food absolutely unforgettable.

The adults sat at one table, and the kids got their own space to dine (and chat freely, of course). They devoured everything we ordered—fried calamari, penne with sauce, guacamole, grilled squid, and even risotto nero with squid ink. We were so proud watching them try everything with enthusiasm.

Then came dessert—a glorious spread of French pastries and sweets. Every child was wide-eyed with excitement. One cousin was slightly disappointed to discover her dessert had dark chocolate (less sweet than expected), but she still gave it a try... and the adults happily polished off the rest. Win-win!

After lunch, we headed to the beach in Biarritz. It was scenic, but not quite what we imagined—rocky shoreline and crashing waves made for a short, stressful visit. Let’s just say the moms were on high alert and we made a speedy retreat.

Back at our “palace” in Etxauri, we shifted into wind-down mode. Some kids helped shop for dinner ingredients while others jumped into the pool or kicked around a soccer ball.

Dinner was a cozy homemade affair:

  • Spaghetti with white sauce

  • Roasted chicken

  • Fresh salad

  • Warm, crusty bread

And for dessert, our French cousins brought a little taste of home—fine chocolates and seasonal fruit. The perfect end to a day filled with family, food, and flexibility.

🍽️ Little Eaters Takeaways

  • Let kids take the lead. A simple breakfast like crepes becomes magical when kids are the ones prepping and serving it. Letting them be the chefs sets the tone for confidence and creativity.

  • Trying new foods is easier in good company. Surrounded by cousins and laughter, even squid and squid ink risotto got a thumbs-up from our crew.

  • Not every adventure goes as planned. The rocky beach and rough waves weren’t ideal, but our flexibility turned the day around—and taught the kids that fun doesn’t have to be perfect.

  • Balance is key. A fancy lunch out followed by a homemade dinner helps ground kids in routine while still embracing the joy of vacation variety.
