🥾 Unexpected Adventures & Familiar Foods: Hiking with Little Eaters in Ireland

Our first full day in Ireland including a family hike. We thought it was 7KM, but we were wrong and it was 7 MILES! Let’s just say our kids were not happy with us the last half of the hike, but we were determined to catch the boat back. No way would we walk back.

We set out for a family hike—fresh air, green hills, and just enough time to build an appetite. But as any parent knows, plans don’t always go as expected. Our scenic walk turned into a much longer trek, complete with muddy boots, tired legs, and very hungry little hikers.

Thankfully, I’d made a grocery run that morning to stock up on familiar, easy-to-pack snacks and lunch staples. I grabbed:

  • Whole grain rolls

  • Sliced cheese and ham

  • Apples and bananas

  • Mixed Nuts, Dried Mango, Potato Chips

The kids were reassured by the familiarity—eating what they know gave them comfort (and energy!) in a new environment. We found a grassy spot mid-hike, laid out our little picnic, and honestly? It was an excellent family meal. Simple food. Big appetite. Happy memories.

🍎 Little Eater Takeaway:

When exploring new places, bring along familiar foods to help your kids feel grounded and secure. Especially on longer adventures, comfort foods can reduce stress and help little ones stay fueled without the pressure of trying new things on the go.
