Little Bites, Big Adventures: Airport Edition

We’re off! Our family adventure to Ireland, France, and Spain has officially begun—and like any good story, it starts with food.

Airport food, to be exact.

You’d think it would be the least exciting part of the trip—rubbery sandwiches, rushed bites between gate changes—but for us, it turned out to be the first stop on our kids’ international eating adventure.

We have two young travelers in tow that have similar, yet different taste buds. So when we told them we were going to eat at the airport, their reactions ranged from wide-eyed excitement to polite dread.

The Terminal Test

Our first challenge: a delayed flight to NYC meant a snack and a game at the table. We love Rumikub and this travel set is 100%.

An evening snack included calamari, chips and queso, and a shrimp cocktail before boarding our flight that ended up delaying us more than anticipated, meaning we would miss our connecting flight in NYC :(

What We Learned:

  • Let them lead. Giving kids a little control—especially in a chaotic place like an airport—goes a long way.

  • One new thing is our new travel food rule. It makes trying foods an adventure, not a punishment.

  • We packaged a game bag for us to enjoy being with each other at the table. This reduces stress and makes the meal experience more enjoyable.

And just like that, our first memory of the trip isn’t the flight delay or the long security line—it’s our kids tasting high protein appetizers, a fun table top activity, and making their first food choices of the journey.

Next stop: NYC for the night now that our flight is delayed.
